Oaklands College’s Wolves women’s basketball team are celebrating after winning the Women’s National Trophy over the weekend (21 March).
The Wolves were awarded the trophy after an impressive win against Oxford City Hoops of 73-54.
The victory was built on organised defence and a balanced scoring effort, with an outstanding performance from Wolves player Kyla Nelson, who was named Most Value Player in the final.
Seventeen-year-old Kyla said: “It was a fantastic performance by all the team and I was thrilled to be named MVP. We stayed together as a team and kept playing our style. We need to keep up our level for the remaining league games so that we move into the playoffs on a positive.”
Michael Ball, Director of Oaklands’ Basketball Academy, said: “The players absolutely deserved the win and to be crowned National Trophy Champions. The parents and junior Wolfpack players who came to support the team were fantastic and it was great to see our young student athletes performing on a national stage without any fear.
“Oxford Hoops put together a good game-plan to try to take us out of our rhythm and they competed hard throughout but we led from the beginning to the end and hopefully we can continue to improve through the rest of the season.”
