HATFIELD — This week an army of Oaklands College students stepped up to pitch their sports skills against other Hertfordshire colleges in the Inter FE Games.

A rainy start to the day didn’t stop play, with students donning signature blue Oaklands bibs to play across nine sports and activities including football, netball, American football, badminton, table tennis, archery, cricket, boccia and also an exercise in teambuilding.

Team Oaklands pulled together from mainstream and the Special Educational Needs (SEN) departments to represent the college in mainstream and SEN games in each sport, playing against students from three other colleges in Hertfordshire: West Herts College, North Herts College and Herts Regional College.

Based on a focus on inclusivity and accessibility to sport, The Inter FE Games welcomes students from all study areas and of all abilities to come together for a bit of inter-college friendly competition. The Oaklands contingency were represented with students spanning areas such as Animal Care, Horticulture, Health & Social Care, Business, IT, Performing Arts, Motor Vehicle, Public Services, Hospitality & Catering and Engineering.

Hosted at the Hertfordshire Sports Village at the University of Hertfordshire, the Inter FE Games are led by Tanya Angus of Herts Sports Partnership in conjunction with the College’s Tackling Inactivity and Wellbeing leads, with additional support from the sports national governing bodies on the day.

Kick starting the day was a brilliant display at the opening ceremony by from World BMX Champion Mike Mullen before students headed off to their respective areas of the Sports Village to prepare to get started.

Team Oaklands came in fourth place overall, securing a first place medal in SEN Basketball, and second places in Table Tennis, Football, SEN Cricket and Teambuilding.  Taking the winning trophy this year was North Herts College who won within the SEN games and overall winner.
