Currently studying within the final year of a UH Foundation Degree in Animal Management, Evan speaks to Oaklands College about his student experience and what kept him coming back to the college.

Evan began his studies at Oaklands College in 2014 and has not looked back since, with a burning passion for animal care and specifically herpetology, conservation and interest in animal legislation laws, Evan has been a shining example of hard work and determination at the college.

Completing a Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care, a Level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Animal Management and a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management, Evan has excelled during his time at Oaklands College and is nearing the finish line of his Foundation Degree in Animal Management.

Speaking of his student experience, Evan said: “I’ve enjoyed all of the courses that I’ve studied over the past four years at Oaklands College, they’ve built my confidence and furthered my skills, it’s been surprising how much I’ve enjoyed the learning experience and is a large part behind why I’ve stayed at the college for the length of time I have.”

Evan has big plans for the future and has set his sights on one day owning and running his own animal centre, adding: “I want to be able to make a difference and give back to the industry and to own my own specialist centre would be a dream way to do that.”

The foundation degree’s on offer at Oaklands College allow students flexibility to work whilst they study to provide financial support and security. Evan, who is in college two days a week works part-time to self-fund his travel to college and is hoping that the work experience he has gained during the time will benefit him when pursuing a career within the industry.

Evan’s advice to students interested in studying a foundation degree is: “Don’t underestimate what you can achieve and how much you can learn by studying at college, I’ve learnt about behaviors, laws and legislation and investigative measures within the animal care industry which have opened my eyes and enhanced my passion to make a difference within the industry.”
