Evie, a Level 2 Apprentice in Hair Professionals speaks to Oaklands College about her decision to take up an apprenticeship, her college experience and plans for the future.

Currently studying the first of her two year Diploma, Evie always had her sight set on an apprenticeship, “because it allows [her] to learn, whilst getting paid.”

Evie said: “I feel I have learnt a wide variety of techniques quicker than what I would have if I hadn’t have studied an apprenticeship. I’ve learnt on the job, I’m based at college one day a week and the rest of my week is spent at a local salon, where I apply to techniques and skills I’ve learnt with real clients.”

Evie already has ambitions for what she would like to achieve after she finishes her apprenticeship, adding: “By the end of my apprenticeship I want to achieve a strong grade and go away feeling like I’ve learnt everything that I could possibly learn, so that when I enter the industry as a qualified professional I will be the best that I can be.”

“From studying the apprenticeship, I’ve already learnt all of my blow-drying, cutting and colouring techniques. I feel like I’ve learnt more from studying an apprenticeship than I would have if I were studying a regular course, the hands-on practical approach has helped me develop my skills quickly.

“My advice for anyone thinking about studying an apprenticeship would be to go for it as you won’t regret it!”
