Course Studied: Level 3 Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism

Meet Holly, a second-year student studying a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism who has already secured a job within the sector post-college.

Tell us about your time at Oaklands. What led you to study here and what did you enjoy about your time at the college?

“I had originally planned to go to Sixth Form at school to study Travel and Geography, but I wanted to challenge myself in new surrounding as so came to an Open Event at Oaklands and knew it was the place for me. Unfortunately due to the pandemic, we were unable to go on any trips, which would of been a highlight, but my tutors Natali and Katie made sure we had other engagements with employers via virtual online webinars and these were really eye-opening to hear what life working in the industry is like.

During the course, the college also converted an old classroom into a mock airliner, with aircraft seating, windows and equipment so that we could practise and gain experience of what it would be like to work as Cabin Crew and I really enjoyed that, it gave me the confidence to start applying for roles in the industry.”

What are your plans post-college?

“I am progressing onto employment after college – I reached out to a number of airlines in my final year and after going through an interview process with Ryanair, I was offered a role as Cabin Crew. It is the perfect role for me as I love to travel and I really enjoy working and interacting with the public. My course helped me decide what it is I want to spend my career doing and I’m really proud to have already secured my dream job within the industry, I can’t wait to get started!

What would you say have been the major highlights of your time at Oaklands?

My tutors and my classmates – Natali and Katie were such amazing tutors and their passion for the industry rubbed off on us, I’m really grateful for the support they gave us and for their expertise. I also made some really good friends in my class, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable.

Finally, would you recommend the course to future students?

Yes – Absolutely. Even though we were unable to go on any trips and experience different countries, the course was still really enjoyable, it gave me the confidence I needed to pursue my dream job so I would definitely recommend it to any students who are also interested in travel and the tourism industry.
