Name: Sophie
Course: Level 3 Business Administration Apprentice

Sophie, 20, works in the college’s Enterprise department and is involved in Employability and Work-based Learning.

“I chose to do an apprenticeship because I felt it would be a more successful route compared to university as I am quite a practical person. I really liked the idea of learning while earning,” said Sophie, who lives in St Albans.

“Since starting my apprenticeship at Oaklands, I feel my personal and professional development has established and my confidence has grown. Working with external and internal colleagues has widened my understanding and knowledge.”

One of the highlights for Sophie so far has been to help organise the Your Future Fair in St Albans, where young people get the chance to meet employers and education providers to discover what their options are.

“Leading up to the event I promoted it on social media, attended business meetings for planning, and handed out flyers to the public,” said Sophie. “At the event I acted as ‘front of house,’ ensuring people were welcomed in a friendly and professional manner and directed to their preference of employer. I really enjoyed being able to contribute to such an exciting event.”

Looking to the future, Sophie says: “I am looking forward to developing my skills even further and getting involved in new challenges.”
