Steven is studying the Level 3 Health & Social Care course

steven

Name: Steven
Course: Level 3 Diploma in Health & Social Care

Steven didn’t really know what he wanted to do at college, and after trying a few different courses, he found his calling in Health & Social Care.

Following a family tradition, Steven joined the Level 1 course and enjoyed it so much, he is now on course to complete the Level 3 course.

“Caring runs in the family. My dad is a trained social worker and my mum is a carer and now my little brother wants to study Health & Social Care too,” said Steven, from Welwyn Garden City.

Steven wasn’t sure what area he wanted to specialise in, until he went out on a placement. “I worked on placement in a care home and I realised that I enjoyed it and it was something I could do as a job.”

Certain of what he wants to do as a career, Steven is considering completing the College’s Higher National Diploma in Health & Social Care to give him the edge in the job market.

“Having the Diploma behind me will hopefully make me more employable and give me a chance to get more experience. I can also go to university afterwards if I want to.”

Steven offers some guidance for students who might not be sure about their future career, saying: “Find something that suits you and focus on it. If you find something you like, you are more likely to stick with it.”

Head of Department for Care & Early Years at Oaklands Donna Callaway said: “It’s fantastic to see Steven doing so well and on track to being very successful. His hard work, efforts and positive attitude to overcome barriers have been the key to his success. He will be an asset to any Health & Social Care organisation.”
