Meet Tyrik, currently studying a Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair at Oaklands College.

Tyrik joined Oaklands College in 2017, where he was enrolled onto a Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair. Upon completing the one-year course, Tyrik progressed onto the Level 3 City & Guilds Diploma.

Tyrik benefited from the modern, industry standard motor vehicle workshop situated on the St Albans campus and quickly learnt how to put practical skills to use, when he was offered a work experience opportunity through popular car manufacturer, Fiat.

After impressing the Garage Manager at Fiat, Tyrik was offered full-time employment, using the practical skills he had learnt at Oaklands College to use in the real world of work.

Dean Kilmartin; Tyrik’s former Assessor and Lecturer said: “Tyrik started with us as Level 2 without much knowledge within the motor vehicle trade. At first, he found it difficult to find employment as he had not built up the necessary work experience that employers were looking for, so the college engaged with Tyrik and supported him in discovering work experience opportunities alongside his learning.

Tyrik was able to secure a work experience placement at a local Fiat dealership, where he worked alongside the mechanic team and further developed his skills and transferable skills.

Through speaking to the managerial team at Fiat, we discovered that Tyrik had impressed his peers who said they were impressed by his hardworking attitude and willingness to learn.”

Tyrik’s pathway to employment, aided by the support of his lecturers tutorship at Oaklands College is a testament to the practical work experience opportunities made available to students.
