Name: Hugh Pettit
Course: Level 4 Business Administration Apprenticeship
After spending a year at University, Hugh Pettit decided that the course and city to which he was studying in wasn’t right for him.
“Rather than changing course or moving to a different University, I decided to begin searching for something that involved on-the-job training, to which the apprenticeship scheme was perfect.”
After searching for the perfect course and job role to accompany his apprenticeship, Hugh found an exciting opportunity at local St Albans based company My Mustard, a pay-per-click advertising company specialising in simple and transparent advertising campaigns.
Speaking of his experience at the company, Hugh said: “I’ve enjoyed the ease that everything is done. It isn’t very time consuming, working around 6 hours a week. Despite that, I’ve always felt in-the-loop and always known where to go and who to ask for if I have any issues.”
Hugh is another apprenticeship student from Oaklands College with his head firmly on his shoulders and with a plan for the future. “Hopefully in several years I plan to start working freelance and have plans to start up a company with my brothers, who are in similar industries.”
Despite his plans for the future, Hugh is determined to stay on at his current employers “I’m extremely happy with the company I am with at the minute, so I will definitely stay here for a while, as long as they’ll have me!”
Hugh’s experience of the apprenticeship programme has been one full of knowledge building, personal development and confidence growth.
Speaking of his apprenticeship highlights to date, Hugh said: “becoming part of a growing and very successful business, whilst also gaining some excellent business knowledge. The full-time work has massively boosted my confidence in the working world, which is something I would have severely missed out on had I stayed at University.”
Hugh’s advice for any students interested in studying an apprenticeship is: “If you’re thinking about University but aren’t completely sure if it’s for you, look into apprenticeships because by the time you’d have finished University, you could have already gained an incredible about of fantastic experience and will be earning a salary the whole time, rather than accumulating student debts!”
