Student festive flash mob wow Welwyn Garden City shoppers

A group of Oaklands Performing Arts students took centre stage in one of Welwyn Garden city’s busiest retail outlets – with a flash mob performance to kick off the festive season.

The students, who study Levels 2 and 3 and HND level Performing Arts were invited down by the high street giant for a performance with a difference at their annual festive launch event.

The creative gang chose ‘Seasons of Love’ from the musical ‘Rent’ – a song not traditionally associated bit Christmas but with plenty of festive feeling.

In a traditional ‘Flash Mob’ style, the students circulated the store, seemingly blending in with the crowds browsing before bursting into song and dance.

Despite taking on the task just a couple of weeks ago, the team practiced during their free time at lunchtimes, polishing their moves before the big event.

A video of their efforts has been published online, racking up on estimated 5000 views in just over 48 hours.

Performing Arts tutor Victoria Markham was thrilled with the student’s effort. She said: “We were thrilled to be invited along – it’s not often one of the biggest names in retail gives an opportunity like this. Our students delivered a great performance on the night – it really got the crowds talking.

“It’s not just about the performance itself – their enthusiasm, dedication and commitment to practicing did us proud – what a great event to kick start the festive season!”

The event took place on Wednesday 9th November, the day before John Lewis officially launched their 2016 Christmas advert – an annual PR event which to many  signals the unofficial countdown to Christmas.
