St Albans Campus Redevelopment
Our £62 million St Albans Campus redevelopment was given the green light back in 2017, enabling us to transform our site with modern state-of-the-art facilities.
The look and feel of the campus will be entirely transformed with plans to introduce brand new administration areas, teaching centres, workshops and a sports pavilion. Excitingly, this money will give us a unique opportunity to make fundamental changes to the appearance, layout and quality of the campus facilities.
The focal point of the new development will be the specially purposed Gateway Building, which will house a new student centre, support services and campus café. A new sports pavilion will provide lockers, changing rooms, and a viewing platform for spectators as well as classrooms for theoretical lessons.
Elsewhere on the site, a large new teaching centre will accommodate almost 50 new classrooms alongside new offices for curriculum staff. On the east side of the campus, a large new construction centre will house brand new industry-standard workshops for our construction students.
The enhancement programme rolls out over five years to minimise disruption to the campus and current students. The first phase of construction commenced in 2018, with the development currently on schedule to be completed in 2024.
The first phase of the development is our two-storey residential homestead, completed in July 2020. Located on the west side of the campus, the homestead offers residential accommodation for 80 students including communal areas and kitchens and a large car park.
Construction of the second phase of the redevelopment, a large teaching block - the Evolution Centre - commenced in March 2020 and boasts 49 new classrooms, various offices for curriculum staff, multi-purpose spaces for teaching and specialist facilities for our special needs provision. This occupies a central part of the campus and opened to students in November 2021.
Phase Three will commenced in early 2022. This phase sees the construction of a brand new Sports Pavilion to house six new changing rooms, hydrotherapy and physiotherapy areas and specialist facilities for sports and academy students
The second part of this phase will be home to the new Construction Centre, a large facility containing industry-standard workshops for our construction students and spacious, modern crafts bays to prepare students for the industry
Phase Three is estimated for completion in 2023.
Starting 2022/23, the fourth and final phase will introduce the brand new Gateway. Its features include a fully-equipped Learning Resource Centre and Reception, campus café, library and specialist facilities for our Supported Learning department.
This will form the centrepiece of the new campus development and is due for completion in 2024.
In addition to our campus development, we also oversaw the construction of a brand new multi-functional 3G pitch at our St Albans Campus.
It provides a state-of-the-art, floodlit pitch for use by the college's Wolves Sports Academies and external commercial opportunities.
