Meet Josie Harding

Josie Harding Level 2 Hairdressing Apprentice

Name: Josie Harding
Course: Hairdressing Apprenticeship Level 2

Currently in her second year of her Hairdressing Apprenticeship, Josie is settled in as one of the team at Welwyn Garden City based Academy Hair & Beauty.

Growing up around a hairdresser in the family, Jodie developed a love for the creativity in hairdressing from an early age. After her school years in Hatfield, she began a full time course in Childcare but saw the opportunity to explore her passion and earn on the job with an Apprenticeship.

Now in her second year, as usual week for Jodie will see her at work at the salon four days a week, with one day a week at College in Welwyn Garden City, home of our Hair & Beauty department. All lessons are now practical, whereas in the first year of her Apprenticeships they were a blend of theoretical and practical learning.

The needs of the industry mean within her working hours, Jodie often has to work Saturdays. She has expanded her skillset and areas of responsibility quickly, moving  from washing hair and general duties to colouring, styling and cutting alongside the rest of the team.

Josie’s proudest moment to date in training was winning an award for 2017 Oaklands College Hair Apprentice of the Year, at the college department of year award ceremony, surrounded by friends and family.  Her long-term goals are to continue studying for her Level 3 Apprenticeship in Hairdressing and to become a session stylist.

Speaking about her Apprenticeship, Josie said: “College is a much more independent environment to school, an Apprenticeship even more so and I’ve realised I really like that. The tutors treat you as equals – they are on hand to help and support whilst allowing you to find your own way. They helped me find this placement and I’m really thankful for the opportunity.”

Her advice for anyone considering an Apprenticeship? “Just go for it!”
