Advanced Learner Loan

As long as you are aged 19 or over on the first day of your course, are a UK resident, enrolling onto an eligible course, at Level 3 or above, then you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan.

The Advanced Learner Loan will cover the cost of your course, so you do not have to pay upfront.

How do I qualify?

You qualify for the loan if you are:-

  • Aged 19 or over on the first day of your course (there’s no upper age-limit)
  • Living in the UK on the first day of your course and have lived in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for three years prior.
  • If you are aged 24 or over and enrolling on an eligible course at Level 3 or above.


  • If you are aged between 19-23 and this will be your second Level 3 course or above, which includes A Levels, Access to HE Diplomas, other Diplomas and Certificates.

Please note If your loan is not approved by Student Finance England (SFE) before the start date of your course you will not be able to enrol/continue with your studies.

Can I get support from Advanced Learner Loans and Bursary Fund?

Please note that you need to have the Advanced Learning Loan to be eligible to access the Bursary Fund. If you or your employer pay your fees then you will not be eligible for the Bursary.

The Bursary fund provides support for those of you that are disadvantaged and vulnerable students.

Those of you that have had a loan approved by the Student Loans Company (SLC) and have registered for their course are potentially eligible, dependant on need. Download a copy of the policy below.

Higher Education Bursary

All students joining a Higher Education programme are liable for tuition fees.  There are no concessions available however you can apply for a Student Loan to cover your tuition fee. You may also be eligible for a Maintenance Loan. The College also has an HE Bursary and students can apply for this.

Bursary Fund

Oaklands College provides bursaries for both 16-18 and 19+ year old students who have a household income below £29,250. There are different types of bursary available which have different criteria 

Additional Financial Support

Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for additional support in the form of discounted travel, free meals or help with childcare during your time at College.
