Student plasters his way to a silver medal

After three days of intense competition, Byron Lancaster, Oaklands College student, has been awarded a silver medal in plastering at the prestigious National Skill Build contest in Wales.

Battling it out against regional winners from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, Byron, a second year plastering student, pitted his skills against third year apprentices and came out victorious, missing first place by only four per cent.

Byron will be attending an awards ceremony in the Worshipful Company of Plaisterers Hall in October and has also received awards from British Gypsum.

Justin Brimmer, Lecturer of Plastering at Oaklands College, commented: “This is a highly commended and recognised competition. With the attendance of World Skill Chief Executive, UK Skills Chief Executive, the Head of British Gypsum and other leading MPs, business and education leaders, Byron proudly represented the college on the podium.

“He went up against all of the best regional winners and it is to his credit that he gained a well deserved second place, reflecting all of his hard work in preparing for the competition over the summer.”
