‘We must value all life and the lives of others’ was the final poignant message delivered to over a thousand Oaklands College students in a powerful road safety session by Hertfordshire Road Safety Partnership.

Students from all across the College packed out theatres in Welwyn Garden City and Campus last week for ‘Learn2Live’, an interactive, engaging and thought provoking session which brings to life real stories and hammers home powerful messages about our responsibility to be safe on the road.

The sessions were organised by the College Enrichment Team Outside The Box as an important informative session to kick-start the new academic year. Learn2Live shares an on screen story of  a group of teenagers on a night out. As events unfold, local and real-life emergency services teams stop the story to tell of their own personal experiences on the UK’s roads.

Powerful statistics such as the fact young male drivers are 17 times more likely to be involved in a road collision between the hours of 2am-5am and one in three boys are statistically more likely to have an accident in their first year of driving opposed to one in seven girls, delivered a powerful message to the young audience.

Speakers ranged from representatives from Bedfordshire Hertfordshire and Cambridge Roads Policing, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue, the East of England Ambulance Service and Trading Standards. By drawing on their personal anecdotes and experiences, they advised on relevant issues for young people such as speeding, peer pressure, substance influences and the importance of vehicle checking and maintenance in relation to safety.

Director of Student Experience Sean Scully said: “Learn2Live delivers a powerful message about road safety which is very relatable to our students. Using Hertfordshire-based speakers, who see the sharp end of Road Safety in their day-to-day jobs and using real-life examples really brought the message home.

“The session is not devised to create fear, but to educate and empower young people to make the right choices. We all have a part to play in making our roads as safe as possible.”
