14-16 Programme

Oaklands College works in partnership with schools across Hertfordshire to provide vocational training to 14–16 year-olds. This gives students the chance to come and study in an independent environment for half a day a week, to learn new, transferable skills, offering them the best start in their chosen area.

Our 14-16 Courses

We have developed a wide and interesting range of vocational courses that run alongside students' GCSE choices. These courses are designed to enhance their learning experience and provide them with an engaging and rewarding experience while developing the skills needed for further studies or employment through both practical and theoretical learning.

All our courses are delivered by qualified, vocationally trained lecturers and subjects are taught in dedicated, industry-standard facilities to ensure the best possible learning environment.

Schools are supported by a dedicated 14-16 coordinator who will liaise with the school and provide regular feedback.

For all courses, prospective students will be offered the chance to attend the college for a practical taster session in their chosen subject. All students will be required to complete an application form via their school.

The Subjects We Offer

We currently offer courses in the following areas:

  • Animal Care

Students on the 14-16 programme will be in college half a day a week for the full academic year. On completing year one of the programme, students can then continue their course into the second year if they wish.

There are usually ten to twelve students on each course and these can be from a mix of students from various schools. There is, however, the opportunity for schools to purchase a bespoke group, for their school alone. If a school purchases a bespoke group at a set cost they can fill this group with any number of students up to twelve.

The course aim is to prepare students for post 16 progression either at college, apprenticeship or employment with training. To support this, careers guidance will be given in tutorials, IAG sessions run by the careers team and opportunities to study in a variety of curriculum areas through their vocational sessions.

All of our current courses are listed in The Register of Regulated Qualifications. Students will achieve a recognised vocational qualification, if they successfully complete their programme, and attend for the required time.

Students accessing the course in Year 10 can progress to Year 11 having achieved qualifications in a range of subjects. These will support their GCSEs

Students who spend part of their lessons in a workshop environment will be expected to wear appropriate protective clothing. The College does not supply this and should be purchased by the school or student with prior agreement.
