ST ALBANS — Out came the summer sun this weekend and with it brought a fantastic turnout as thousands flocked to Oaklands College’s annual Summer Fayre.

The day of family fun is a regular fixture in the college event calendar and sees hoards of families head to St Albans Campus on Hatfield Road.

Many of the day’s events were delivered by students such as Lamb Racing, sports activities and Music and Performing Arts live on the main stage. Hospitality and Catering students were also behind the grill among the stalls in the Food Court cooking up tasty treats for the crowds.

Visitors could also enjoy a funfair, a wealth of craft and gift stalls, food cuisine from around the world, Zorbs, donkey rides and for the first time hovercrafts which took visitors for a spin across the college golf course.

Many also enjoyed the opportunity to make a trip up to the college’s Animal Management centre to meet with staff, students and some of the animals cared for by the team in Oaklands Habitat.

The newly appointed Mayor of the City and District of St Albans, Cllr Mohammad Iqbal Zia, also joined the day’s celebrations and met with staff and students across a number of curriculum areas during his visit.

The Mayor said: “I had a fantastic time at Oaklands College’s annual Summer Fayre touring round all the fun activities laid on for the local community. It was enjoyable meeting the many students and staff at the college. I was very impressed with how they had worked together to organise entertaining events and wonderful stalls that showed off their skills to great effect.”

Oaklands Principal Zoe Hancock said: “We are really pleased people took the opportunity to have a fun day out. We are proud to open our doors so people can experience the College and the great facilities and staff we have.”
