Welcome to our newest farm additions

Oaklands College is delighted to welcome four new members to the farm’s growing family of animals.

The four new female beef calves, Astraea, Athena, Aphrodite & Freya will be cared for by farm manager Del Knowles and his students, further enhancing the educational experience of students studying from our variety of agriculture and animal management courses.

The four calves, who are of Aberdeen Angus, Limousin and Hereford breed were all born through late September and early October and are settling in well at the farm.

Tanya Peters and Naomi Starkey, two of our second-year students studying a Level 3 Diploma in Agriculture, were invited to Melton Mowbray Market along with Del Knowles and agriculture tutor Karen Hood, to gain valuable first-hand experience and learn how farms acquire their livestock.

Speaking of her experience at the cattle market, Naomi said; “For me the most interesting part of auction was seeing the range of breeds and ages of the animals being sold.”

As part of their course learning, agriculture students will monitor the calves weight gains once a week to ensure they are progressing as expected, in addition to this, students will deliver halter training to the calves so that they can be shown at the Hertfordshire County Show which runs from the 25^th and 26^th May 2019.
