On Friday 6 January, a group of our AS and A2 Citizenship and Politics students had a fantastic day at the Guardian Education Centre in London, learning about the suffrage issue of women and their right to vote.

The workshop entailed making newspaper front pages using special Guardian software that helps modern-day journalists write articles, but involved information that was available on June 4, 1913.

On this particular day in history, news was telegrammed to the Guardian concerning Emily Davison, a militant suffragete who threw herself in front of the Kings horse for the cause at the Epsom Derby.

Students had to work to a time limit and filter through a large amount of information as well as edit the paper and write headlines and captions in a 1913 written style.

The trip also included a tour of the Guardian offices and a sneak preview of the following day’s paper.
