BCS Cup Champions after beating Loreto College 78-45

1 April 2014

BIRMINGHAM — Last week, Oaklands College’s Women’s Basketball team were crowned National BCS Cup Champions after beating Loreto College 78-45.

The final, held in the Doug Ellis Sports Centre in Birmingham, saw the team play a tough game against Harefield Academy in the semi-final, and in the final against Loreto College.

However, this was not the first time the Oaklands Women’s Basketball team have played Loreto College. In 2011, they were victorious against the other St Albans team, beating them 75-64.

Head Coach and Wolves Basketball Academy Manager, Michael Ball, commented: “It was an excellent day for the team. We went into the day knowing that it was going to be as much a mental challenge as a physical one, having to play two full games on the same day.

“The team played some excellent basketball, and they needed to as both Harefield Academy in the semi-final and Loreto College in the final proved to be tough competitors.

“However, we hit important 3 point shots when we needed it and our defence created fast-break opportunities to score at vital times. Some of our first years, who have never played in a final before, were nervous at times but demonstrated skill and great sportsmanship.”

Team Captain, Zoe Littlechild, added: “We were determined to bring back the trophy this year.

“We know each other’s strengths, and with Coach Michael Ball installing in us that we needed to play great team basketball at both ends of the court if we are to be successful, we knew what we needed to do to be Champions.”

The team now move on to their next challenge with the BCS National Championships 4-6 April held in Bath, where they will compete to retain their title.
