Former Oaklands College student Niki Garner—now Director of Creative at ITV—has shared an uplifting message for today’s learners, blending the story of her own remarkable career with advice for those eager to enter the creative industries.
Garner studied Media Production and Communication at Oaklands more than 25 years ago and credits the College’s mix of theory, practical projects and supportive tutors for sparking her love of advertising. She fondly recalls the late Glenn Phillips, who “talked to us in a way that teachers hadn’t before… you felt empowered to do the best you could do.”
Following her time at Oaklands, Garner seized a two-week work-experience placement in a London design agency that grew into a five-year role. From there she built an international career across leading agencies—including a 12-year stint at the renowned Mother—before joining ITV to lead its in-house creative team and launch major brand campaigns.
While reflecting on her journey, Garner focused on the opportunities awaiting Oaklands students today. “The doors are far more open now,” she said. “What stands out in the industry is a real passion for the work, a can-do attitude and a growth mindset.”
She urged students to explore every aspect of their courses: “Lean into what you’re most enjoying. Identify what motivates you and what you’re passionate about. Whether you’re sending out copy instructions or just filing, those small tasks matter—take what you can from each experience.”
Above all, she reminded them to savour their College years: “Enjoy it and throw yourselves wholeheartedly in. Don’t waste the decisions you’ve made—apply yourself and have loads of fun. Being at College is such a unique time where you feel more grown up and empowered to choose how you learn.”
For Garner, the creative industry remains a rewarding space: “It’s a privilege to work in a field that entertains, enlightens, and can drive change. If you have that fire in your belly, there’s a place for you.”
Niki Garner’s journey from Oaklands College media student to ITV’s creative director shows how passion and determination can open doors beyond traditional academic routes. Her message to current students is simple: embrace every opportunity, stay curious, and enjoy your time at Oaklands.
