A teenage swimming sensation from St Albans has returned home triumphant after securing an incredible eight gold medals at a major international competition.
Sixteen-year-old Joe, who represented Great Britain at the 8th European Down Syndrome Swimming Championships in Albufeira, Portugal, said the achievement has only fuelled his desire to “train harder”.
Competing against 102 swimmers from across Europe, Joe dominated the junior categories, taking home titles in backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle, as well as four further golds in the combined event.
Reflecting on the tournament, which wrapped up in early November, he described it as “incredible”, adding: “One hundred and fifty per cent it was the best time of my life.”
Joe, who trains in the pool four times a week with Verulam Swim Club and attends Oaklands College’s LIFE (Learning for Independence and Future Employment) provision, said the success has strengthened his motivation. He said “Knowing I got these titles makes me want to train harder. You’ve just got to get out there and do your thing; there’s no fun in swimming if you’re not going to train.”
The LIFE programme supports students who need extra guidance, helping them achieve their goals in a mainstream college environment through tailored learning in areas such as Springfield, Supportive Learning and Foundation into Vocational Studies.
His parents, Anne and Gary, said they were “delighted” with his performance and proud to see his dedication rewarded on the European stage.
Joe also shared a message for other young athletes chasing big dreams. He said “Keep learning, never give up on what you’ve started. Keep on going to make sure it’s a learning experience, as we all learn from our mistakes. There is always room for improvement.”
With eight gold medals now to his name, the rising star says he’s more determined than ever and already looking ahead to what he can achieve next.
