On Saturday 27th, our Men’s D2 Basketball team opened their season at home against the Northamptonshire Titans. Coming off a strong pre-season, which included wins over Essex Rebels and Richmond Knights, Coach Liam Jefferson’s side entered the game with confidence, reinforced by returning favourites and exciting new signings.
From the tip-off, the home side set the tone. Matt Disu, the 6’4” wing, struck first with a lay-up, sparking a lead in the first quarter that saw us surge to a 20-point lead.
Sustained aggression and relentless defensive pressure kept the Titans on the back foot for much of the game. Although the visitors started to gain on the home side, Jefferson’s side maintained composure and never allowed the lead to slip. The season opener ended with an 87–62 win for the home team.
Speaking after the game, Jefferson said:
“I’m happy with the result, but there are still some improvements to be made.”
The men’s team will look to build on their strong start in their next fixture against Endeavour Ipswich, once again on home court, as they aim to extend their winning streak.
Following Saturday’s success, our SLBW regular season champions began their 2025/26 campaign at home on Sunday against the historic London Lions.
The team started with real intent, led by captain Shanice Beckford-Norton, who set the tone with 14 points in the opening quarter. However, sharp shooting from Lions players Jada Lewis and Annika Shah put the visitors ahead 23–26 after the first.
Trailing by three, the home side responded with energy and resilience. Beckford-Norton continued to knock, while in the final quarter, Danielle McCray delivered a decisive burst, racking up eight quick points to put the Lions out of reach. The opener finished with an 85-62 home victory.
Head Coach Lee Ryan reflected after the game:
“It was good to get the win in our home opener against a much-improved Lions team. It’s always a challenge to play the first game with little information on the opposition, so I was pleased with our in-game adjustments, particularly the defensive improvement after the first quarter. Our offensive performance was mixed, which is to be expected this early in the season, but the players are committed and improving all the time. It won’t be long before we’re playing our brand of basketball.
The crowd were amazing, something I hope to see every home game this season!"
