About the course

Level 4 Professional Diploma in Technical & Production Practice - Directing and Cinematography Pathway is a one-year course taught at Pinewood Studios over two days. It allows you to further develop your skills and understanding of the industry expectations. You will be taught by industry specialists at Pinewood who are still currently working in Film & TV. This pathway focuses on directing and cinematography. Level 4 Professional Diploma in Technical & Production Practice - Directing and Cinematography Pathway is a one-year course taught at Pinewood Studios over two days. This pathway focuses on directing and cinematography. The course is run in Partnership with Creative Media Skills Institute based in the heart of Pinewood Studios. Within Pinewood there is a community of over 300 independent businesses along with the productions on-site, these businesses provide connection to a community of creative individuals. The combined spending by film and high-end television productions during 2022 reached '6.27 billion, the highest ever reported. The British Film Institute predicts this figure will reach over 8 billion, and that we will need at least an additional 30,000 crew members by 2025.

Career options

With your Level 4 you could progress directly into the industry within a junior production role. You will have a new network of contacts and skills to help you succeed. You may want to top up your Level 4 at a university.

Throughout the year, you will gain comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience in various aspects of media directing and cinematography. The course covers: Lighting: Master the art of lighting to create mood and atmosphere. Editing: Learn the techniques to piece together your story seamlessly. Cinematography Basics: Understand the fundamentals of camera work and visual storytelling. Blocking: Discover how to plan and execute the movement of actors and cameras. Shot List: Develop the skill to plan your shots effectively. Story Development: Learn how to craft compelling narratives. Team and Hierarchy: Understand the roles and responsibilities within a production team. Camera Trainee Role: Get hands-on experience in assisting with camera operations. Advanced Camera Work: Dive deeper into complex camera techniques. Focus Pulling: Master the precision required for maintaining focus during shots. The Shoot: Gain practical experience in managing a film shoot. DIT (Digital Imaging): Learn the essentials of digital imaging and data management.
