Assessment

Assessment includes two externally set written exams and an Employer-Set Project in Year 1. In Year 2, learners complete a practical occupational specialism project based on real construction scenarios. The final T Level grade combines both components and is graded Distinction*, Distinction, Merit or Pass. To achieve the full qualification, learners must also successfully complete the industry placement.

About the course

T Levels are nationally recognised qualifications for 16'19 year-olds. Equivalent to three A Levels, they combine in-depth classroom learning with a substantial industry placement of at least 45 days (315 hours). At Oaklands College, the T Level in Construction: Design, Surveying and Planning (Construction Management pathway) is designed in collaboration with leading employers to ensure learners gain the skills, knowledge and practical experience required by the construction industry today. This pathway is ideal for learners interested in areas such as construction management, site supervision, project planning, surveying, digital construction technologies and sustainable building practices. Learners develop an understanding of construction methods, project coordination, health and safety management and the commercial aspects of the built environment.

Career options

This T Level is equivalent to three A Levels and carries equivalent UCAS tariff points as three A levels. On successful completion, learners can progress to university courses such as Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering or Building Surveying. Learners may also progress to Higher or Degree Apprenticeships, or directly into employment in roles within construction management, surveying or project coordination.

Successful completion of the Extended Diploma in Construction can lead to progression on to the HNC in Construction or other Higher Education courses or alternatively into employment within the construction and property industry.

Course Content - What will I learn?

Over the two-year programme, learners develop both the technical knowledge and practical skills required for a career in construction management, surveying and planning. In Year 1, learners study the core principles of construction. This includes construction methods and materials, health and safety legislation, sustainability, digital construction technologies such as BIM, project planning, risk management, commercial awareness and construction law. Learners also complete an Employer-Set Project that applies their knowledge to real industry scenarios. In Year 2, learners specialise in Construction Management. They develop skills in coordinating site activities, interpreting technical drawings, monitoring quality and progress, supporting budgeting and resource allocation, and applying professional standards within construction teams. A key part of the programme is a minimum 45-day industry placement, where learners gain hands-on experience with an employer and apply their learning in a real construction environment.
