Our Animal Management students have returned from an incredible educational visit to South Africa with GAP Africa Projects, where they spent time at the renowned Sibuya Game Reserve, taking part in immersive conservation activities, wildlife encounters and hands-on learning experiences.
The trip provided students with a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of global conservation, wildlife protection and sustainable environmental practices, while gaining first-hand experience in one of South Africa's most remarkable wildlife settings.
Throughout their stay, students took part in a wide range of activities designed to showcase the realities of wildlife conservation. They attended anti-poaching briefings, learning about the challenges faced by conservation teams and the vital work being carried out to protect endangered species. One of the highlights of the trip was visiting an anti-poaching dog unit, where students gained valuable insight into the specialist role these highly trained dogs play in tracking poachers and helping to safeguard South Africa's rhino population.
The group also explored the reserve by both safari vehicle and boat, allowing them to experience the region's diverse landscapes and observe iconic wildlife in their natural habitat. Memorable sightings included lions, elephants and rhinos, giving students an unforgettable opportunity to see conservation in action.
Beyond the wildlife encounters, the experience encouraged students to develop their confidence, teamwork and practical knowledge, while broadening their understanding of careers within the global conservation and animal management sector.
This visit built on the success of last year's trip, allowing students to further strengthen their appreciation of international conservation efforts and the importance of protecting biodiversity for future generations.
The students returned to the UK with lasting memories, new skills and a deeper appreciation of the vital work being undertaken to protect some of the world's most endangered wildlife. They also had the opportunity to share their experiences with fellow students and staff during the College's Festival of Achievement Week, inspiring others through their incredible journey.
Experiences such as this demonstrate Oaklands College's commitment to providing students with enriching opportunities that extend beyond the classroom, preparing them with the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to thrive in their future careers.
