Students from across Oaklands College have successfully completed a brand-new aviary for Ophelia, our resident owl, through a collaborative project supported by valued industry partner Willmott Dixon.
The project brought together students from Animal Management, Carpentry and T Level Construction, showcasing the power of cross-college collaboration and hands-on learning.
Animal Management students played a key role in the early stages of the project by selecting the final design for Ophelia’s new home. Two Carpentry students then fabricated the panels and nesting box, before ten T Level Construction students worked alongside the Willmott Dixon team to install and complete the structure.

For our T Level Construction students, the build formed part of their industry placement programme, an essential element of their qualification. T Level students complete 315 hours of industry placement, with many already having spent more than 240 hours with Willmott Dixon in Hitchin, gaining experience across a range of construction and pre-construction activities.
The aviary project provided students with valuable real-world experience, allowing them to apply their skills in a meaningful and collaborative environment. It also highlighted how different curriculum areas can come together to deliver a successful project with a lasting impact on the College community.
We are incredibly proud of all the students who contributed their time, creativity and enthusiasm to create a new home for Ophelia.
A huge thank you to everyone involved in the project, and especially to Willmott Dixon for their continued support in helping our students develop the practical skills and industry experience needed for their future careers.
