We are proud to celebrate the outstanding work of our Level 3 Art students who recently contributed to a collaborative public art project in preparation for the upcoming 100th anniversary of Welwyn Garden City train station in 2026.
Working alongside local partners and Hertfordshire County Council, students were invited to create original artwork inspired by the themes of past, present and future train travel. Their creative responses explored how travel has evolved over time and imagined what it could look like in the future.
Following the completion of the project, selected pieces have now been installed as part of the redevelopment of the subway next to John Lewis in Welwyn Garden City, transforming the space into a colourful and engaging public gallery for residents and visitors to enjoy.
The project was officially unveiled this week and provided students with a valuable opportunity to see their work displayed in a public setting while gaining experience of contributing to a live community brief.
Congratulations to the students whose artwork was selected for installation:
We would also like to extend a special thank you to Tim Burkinshaw for his support throughout the project and for helping students prepare and present their work for this public installation.
This project is a fantastic achievement for our students and demonstrates the power of creativity, collaboration and community engagement through art.
Oaklands College is proud to support opportunities that allow learners to apply their skills beyond the classroom and make a lasting impact within the local community.
