Oaklands Alumnus Gus Scott-Morriss Sends Southend United to Wembley in Dramatic Fashion

Former Oaklands College student Gus Scott-Morriss etched his name into Southend United folklore by scoring the decisive penalty in a thrilling National League play-off semi-final against Forest Green Rovers, propelling the Shrimpers to the final at Wembley Stadium.

The match was a rollercoaster of emotions. Southend took the lead through Ben Goodliffe's header, only for Forest Green to equalise via Ryan Inniss. In extra time, Emmanuel Osadebe put Forest Green ahead, but Jack Bridge’s 116th-minute strike levelled the score and sent the match to penalties.

Scott-Morriss, now affectionately known as "Mr Reliable", stepped up to take the final spot-kick. With composure and confidence, the Oaklands alumnus calmly slotted it home, securing a 4-2 shootout victory and sending Southend to Wembley.

The celebrations were memorable and slightly chaotic. As Gus slid on the pitch in jubilation, a fan running onto the field accidentally collided with him. Ever the good sport, Gus took it in stride and laughed it off on social media after the match.

Southend will now face Oldham Athletic in the National League Promotion Final at Wembley on Sunday 1st June. It’s a huge moment for the club and a proud milestone for one of Oaklands College’s own.
