About the course

As a Commis Chef Apprentice, you'll work closely with a team of chefs as well as colleagues from across the wider business, including front-of-house staff. Depending on the size and structure of the kitchen, you'll typically report to a Chef de Partie, Sous Chef or Head Chef. In some establishments, you may work directly with a Chef Patron or Executive Chef, gaining valuable insight from experienced industry professionals.

Career options

After completing the apprenticeship, you could progress into full-time employment or continue your learning with a higher-level apprenticeship or qualification.

Career progression is excellent for apprentices, and over the course of their careers, those with an Apprenticeship earn on average, £100,000 more than those without. (A Cost-Benefit Analysis of Apprenticeships and Other Vocational Qualifications, University of Sheffield, 2007)

Course Content - What will I learn?

As a Commis Chef Apprentice, you'll develop the skills and knowledge needed to work in a fast-paced professional kitchen. This occupation is commonly found across the hospitality industry, including luxury and fine dining restaurants, gastro pubs, hotels, inns, and conference and events venues, in both independent and branded establishments. Working alongside experienced chefs, you'll learn how to prepare and cook fresh ingredients, create high-quality dishes, and contribute to a kitchen team that delivers excellent food and service. As part of your apprenticeship, you'll support the kitchen team in preparing, cooking and finishing dishes to a high standard. You'll work under the guidance of senior chefs, following instructions carefully to ensure meals are prepared accurately, served on time, and meet customer expectations. You'll also gain experience in managing ingredients and stock, maintaining food quality, and following strict food safety and hygiene standards.
