About the course

This practical workshop is designed for learners who wish to continue developing their pottery skills while creating their own individual pieces with the support and guidance of an experienced tutor. To enrol, you should have previously completed a beginners/ improvers course (approximately 40 hrs). Working in a friendly, relaxed and creative environment, you will have the opportunity to refine existing skills, build confidence and work at your own pace. The course encourages the production of high-quality pottery while supporting your personal creative development and artistic expression. You will revisit and further develop key pottery techniques, including clay preparation (wedging and kneading), slab building, coiling, wheel throwing, centring and creating cylinders, turning and a range of slip decoration and glazing methods. Your individual aims and learning needs will be discussed with the tutor during the first session to help you get the most from the course. Explore a wide variety of ceramic processes and forms. You will develop your skills in coiling, slab construction, wheel work, slip decoration, glazing techniques (including spraying, dipping and pouring), and surface decoration, enabling you to create increasingly accomplished and personalised ceramic pieces. You will have access to clay (buff and terracotta) and a selection of underglazes, glazes and slips.

Career options

Continue with the next course to extend your knowledge and develop your own individual style or consider the Masterclass in Ceramics
