Entry requirements

This is a 60 hour program leading to a nationally recognised qualification in BSL. You will learn to communicate in simple, everyday BSL with Deaf people on a range of topics. No prior experience or knowledge is required or expected. The course is two hours a week for the whole academic year so please ensure that you are able to commit to this length before enrolling.

The qualification consists of three units to pass, please be aware any retakes will be charged. Unit 1 is internally assessed whilst Units 2 and 3 are externally assessed. This will involve short recorded conversational situations involving your tutor using the vocabulary and situations you have been learning. If you need to retake an exam than a charge will be payable

About the course

Gain a nationally recognised qualification while developing practical communication skills in British Sign Language (BSL). This course is designed for beginners and provides a comprehensive introduction to BSL, Deaf Awareness, and Deaf Culture, helping learners build confidence when communicating with Deaf people in a variety of everyday situations. To achieve the Level 1 Award, learners must successfully complete three units. Alongside language development, the course aims to increase understanding of the differences between signed and spoken languages, while providing valuable insight into Deaf issues, Deaf Awareness, and Deaf Culture. Unit 101 'Introduction to BSL, develop the foundations of BSL communication in everyday situations, including: meeting and greeting people, using numbers, discussing the weather and giving and understanding transport directions. Unit 102 'Conversational BSL, build your confidence in more interactive conversations covering: home life, people, animals and objects, using numbers and everyday interests and activities. Unit 103 'BSL in Education and Work, learn language and communication skills relevant to educational and workplace settings, including: getting around, exchanging information, refreshments and social interactions and using numbers. Career options

The successful completion of Level 1 Award allows you to progress onto the Level 2 Award in British Sign Language which is not currently offered at the college. Please search for alternative providers.
