Social Worker

As a social worker, your main role is to help protect vulnerable children and adults from harm or abuse. If you are flexible, open to change and have sensitivity and understanding, this could be the role for you.

Duties: Typical duties for this role would be offering information and counselling, putting together support plans and working closely with communities, health professionals and other agencies.

What you can earn: Starting salary will be around the £24,000 mark, rising to around £40,000 when more experienced.

Mental Health Nurse

Being a Mental Health Nurse would suit you if you’re someone who has sensitivity and understanding, alongside counselling skills such as active listening and a non-judgemental approach.

To get to this role you will need knowledge in psychology, medicine, and dentistry.

Duties: Typical duties of a Mental Health Nurse would be assessing and supporting patients, as well as providing physical care such as medication.

What you can earn: Initial salary may start at around £25,000, but more experience roles could earn around £45,000.

Care Worker

If you’re looking for a career that looks for sensitivity and understanding, patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations, then being a care worker could be the right path for you.

Duties: Depending on where you’re based, your duties could be helping people with support to live at home, or at a care home. This could be helping with washing, dressing, or eating. Or it could be household jobs like washing clothes, shopping, or ensuring they’re taking their medications.

What you can earn: Salary for a care worker ranges from £12,500 to £25,000.

Palliative Care Assistant

A Palliative Care Assistant provides specialist end of life care and support for patients, alongside their families. For this role you’ll need sensitivity and understanding, alongside knowledge of psychology and the ability to work well with others.

Duties: Supporting people and their families to cope with their emotional wellbeing, giving medication and changing medical equipment where required. This role may also include caring for the person’s body after death and updating patient records.

What you can earn: A starting wage will typically be around £18,000 up to £21,000 when more experienced.

Family Support Worker

If you have excellent verbal communication skills, alongside patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations, then a career as a Family Support Worker could be perfect for you.

Duties: For this role you will likely be working with people with addictions, or those in hospital, prison. There may also be needs to support a child or parent with a disability or helping clients to develop parenting and home management skills.

What you can earn: Entry level is around £18,000 however; this can increase to £35,000 and above once fully qualified and experienced.
