Art, Fashion & Design

Our Art, Fashion & Design Department is well equipped to help you make the most of your creative flair, and our experienced staff will be on hand throughout your course to offer help and advice.

We offer a variety of programmes to meet the needs of all students, and offer an exciting and stimulating environment designed to stretch and nurture your creativity in purpose built specialist studios.

We have an excellent reputation with leading art colleges and universities and the majority of our students progress to high profile HE institutions of their choice. According to our research, 98% of our students go into work or further study after completing our courses.

All of our full time programmes include opportunities to support and enhance your learning so that you can achieve your goals and ambitions. Students enrol on a Study Programme which individualises their education whilst enhancing their employability skills. A Study programme is made up of four key elements which includes a main vocational qualification, the development of English and maths through the study of GCSE’s or Functional Skills, Work-related learning through work experience and Personal Development Reviews.

Level 1 Award in Fashion and Clothing

The qualification you will achieve at the end of the course is a Btec L1 Award in Fashion and Clothing. The classes are every week for 20 weeks, over which time you build a sketchbook, practical samples and development ideas, before creating a final piece of clothing based on your research.

The Level 1 Diploma in Art, Design and Media course is constructed to enable you to achieve 37 credits across the range of units of work and subjects necessary for achieving the level 1 diploma. The units will cover a broad programme of subjects: print, textiles, graphics, painting, drawing, 2D, 3D and Functional Skills.

The Foundation Diploma is a rigorous and exciting course designed to develop all your Art and Design skills across a wide range of disciplines. Students are required to successfully complete nine units which are assessed throughout the programme and then subject to External Moderation by Edexcel, the awarding body. The course is divided into three main stages: Exploratory, Pathway, and Confirmatory.

The BTEC L3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design is a broad based course, comprising of 18 units of work including a self directed Final Major Project and exhibition at the end of the 2 years. You will be introduced to a range of specialist workshops across the following subjects: Graphic Design, 3D Design, Textiles, Ceramics, Photography, Painting and Drawing, Printmaking and Contextual studies. In your second year you will choose two specialist subjects to study in preparation for your personal career path into HE or Employment. These could be a combination of Graphics and Photography, Fine Art and Print, Ceramics and 3D Design or Fashion and Textiles, as Fashion is offered as a specialism in the second year. Throughout your course you will have the support of a personal tutor to help you through the assignments and to give you guidance in your future career. In the second year you will have an hours portfolio building a week, in addition to your tutorial.

Graphic Design is Art for Communication - its function is to grab attention and to aid communication between people, businesses and organisations. Constantly changing and challenging. It can be entertaining, persuasive, decorative, educational, informative and functional. The aim of the course is to provide an environment where students gain the correct balance of creative, technical and personal skills to enable them to work in the Graphics industry or continue onto Degree Level study.

The qualification is designed to give learners a technical understanding of Photography. Learners develop knowledge of studio and location photography and digital and traditional methods (wet photography) of photography through vocational projects. You will be given the opportunity to work in a professional darkroom and work on industry standard equipment. The course will also place photography into a wider context through contextual studies where you examine movements and influential photographers. The qualification is for post 16 learners intending to gain employment in this sector, possibly after further study in higher education. You will have the opportunity to enter competitions, work to live briefs and produce group exhibitions. There is an externally assessed brief that will form part of your overall result.

The BTEC L3 Extended Diploma in Fashion & Clothing aims to equip students with a broad range of skills relevant to the fashion and associated industries and our students have an excellent track record of progression success. Subjects covered include pattern cutting, manufacture, textiles, design research, portfolio presentation, sketchbook development, fashion illustration, photography, CAD and Historical and Contextual studies. The course offers a stimulating working environment where students are encouraged to develop their own individual aesthetic signature. Emphasis is placed on technical ability, balanced by creative exploration and material investigation. The highlight of the course, is when students get to create a mini collection supported with research for their Final Major Project which is shown at the end of year show and Summer fair.

Encompassing a whole spectrum of art and design methods, the HND involves the pursuit of visual languages and imagery that hold particular meaning and significance to the artist/ designer. You will also gain the knowledge and and skills to embark on a career in the creative, design and cultural industries, opportunities for work-based learning and experience in design, creative arts and cultural industries, an opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification in two years of full-time study and a progression route to the final year of appropriate honours degree programmes.

You will study a total of 18 units over two years which is the equivalent to 3 A levels. This course is designed to take you through the creative processes of Graphic Design, Animation and Audio Visual Media. The course will then develop into an area of your choice in digital media. Using industry related software for 3D Animation, Web Design, Video and Graphic Design on Apple Macs, you will explore your creative side in exciting and dynamic ways to produce high standard projects. This can lead to a varied career in Game Design, Video Production, Animation or Graphics.
