Oaklands Wolves are one step away from completing a Super League Basketball treble after winning a thrilling play-off semi-final 69-65 against Caledonia Gladiators, on Saturday.
A packed SportsZone saw Lee Ryan's team gain revenge for their SLB Trophy final loss, and Wolves will now travel to the O2 Arena on Sunday to face Sheffield Hatters in the season's biggest game.
Ryan was understandably buzzing after the game: "What a battle, that’s what semi-finals and putting everything on the line looks like" he said. "It could have gone either way but we dug deep and found a way to win, our crowd were unbelievable, best I’ve ever seen at the Den!!
"It’s more history for this incredible group of players, pleased for all of them that they get the chance to compete for the biggest prize of the season. There's just one more game!"
Great Britain international Sam Ashby led the way for Wolves, finishing with 20 points, five rebounds and four steals while Danni McCray had 17 points and seven boards plus a couple of big blocks. Captain Shanice-Beckford finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists despite being called for an incredible four offensive fouls.
McCray opened Wolves' scoring but there was little to choose between the teams in the opening period as Ashby's trey gave the hosts their biggest lead at 16-13 before Gladiators scored the final four points of the quarter to lead 17-16 at the first break,
Terri Battle kept Wolves in touch as Gladiators started the second quarter strongly and Ryan's team weathered the storm before Lavinia Da Silva's lay-up sent them into the locker room with a 30-29 half-time lead.
A pair of three-point plays saw Wolves take control early in the third period and McCray scored the Lane of Plenty to put them 41-29 up with two and half minutes gone to spark a timeout from Gladiators' coach Chantelle Handy.
The move worked as the Scots hit a pair of triples, but Wolves remained in charge, and Beckford-Norton scored a pair at the foul line to lead 56-49 at the final break.
Beckford-Norton drove to the basket to open the fourth period's scoring but Caledonia had one more run in them as they battled to avoid a trophy-less season and a Mathilde Domenger, triple made it a one point game with 7:31 on the clock.
McCray and Beckford-Norton ended the run and Wolves remained ahead without being able to pull away before Ashby dropped a triple to put the hosts 65-61 up going into the final three minutes.
Domenger, struck again to make it a two point game with one minute on the clock and as Gladiators fouled to stop the clock both Ashby and Battle split pairs at the stripe to seal the win and spark wild celebrations.
