Entry requirements

Formal evidence will be required of the following: -Aged 19 plus. -Level 3 Award in Education and Training -Level 3 qualification in the subject you would like to teach - Level 2 English and Maths (GCSE 4/C or equivalent). -Successful completion of a literacy task. You require two placements in the Further Education and Skills sector (a principal and subsidiary placement), totalling 250 hours. You must be in a full teaching/training role and have a minimum of 150 hours (of your 250 hours) of teaching spread evenly over the 2-year duration of the course. You must be responsible for the planning, delivery and assessment of learning. (Short courses or workshops are not appropriate). The college does not offer a placement service. This must be in place before the start of the course. Out of your 250 hours, must have a minimum of 20 hours of live remote delivery, a minimum of 20 hours in a subsidiary placement (this must provide you with a completely different experience to your principal placement) and 100 hours should be made up of your non-teaching hours. This can cover team meeting, interviewing learners, assessments, CPD, etc. You need to have a pastoral mentor and a subject specialist mentor, whom, you need to meet with 30 minutes each week. Your subject specialist mentor must be a fully qualified teacher and be experienced in your subject specialism. You are expected to attend at all sessions. You must be available to attend all classes in person as it is not a distance learning course. Prior to being offered a place on the course you will be invited to attend an interview to carry out an initial assessment and check your eligibility for the course. The course fee is '6000. '3000 is payable at the beginning of year 1. '3000 is payable at the beginning of year 2. It is also eligible for HE loans.

You will be assessed through written and practical assignments building a portfolio of evidence-based containing microteach, coursework assignments, essays, group and individual presentations, reflective practice, 10 observed teaching sessions and a professional development portfolio. You will carry out a Viva at the end of the qualification, which is a pass/refer.

About the course

The Level 5 Diploma is a 2 year part time course (6 terms) which provides a practical approach to the application of knowledge necessary to become a successful teacher / trainer. Sessions are held one afternoon per week: Wednesdays 16.00-20.00.

Course Content - What will I learn?

You will study a mixture of units over the duration of the course with a total of 120 credits to achieve the qualification. This qualification covers all aspects of teaching in the Further Education and Skills (FES) sector and maps fully to the L5 Learning and Skills Teacher occupational standard (ST0149). It includes eight mandatory units: Teaching my subject (15 credits) Teachers and teaching (15 credits) Learners and learning (15 credits) Professional practice (30 credits) Effective digital and online pedagogies (15 credits) Action research (15 credits) Coaching and mentoring (5 credits) Managing behaviour (10 credits)
You will need to provide your own study and teaching resources. There are recommended course books which are not included in the price of the course. These will cost in the region of '150 and will be recommended at interview.
