Oaklands College’s Plumbing team is working with Digital Innovation to bring practical demonstrations into the virtual world, using 360-degree cameras to create immersive learning experiences for students.
Led by Eden Longley, Head of Plumbing, the teaching team is exploring how virtual reality (VR) can support practical learning by allowing students to revisit demonstrations and reinforce their understanding of key techniques. Using the College’s VR headsets, students can feel immersed in the workshop environment, providing a valuable visual reminder of the processes demonstrated during their practical sessions.
The first project focuses on pipe bending, with Plumbing tutor Mark Norris delivering a demonstration that highlights the practical application of mathematics within the curriculum. The immersive recording allows students to revisit each stage of the process and strengthen their understanding of the techniques involved.
Alongside the VR experience, the team is also developing a 2D desktop version that will be available through a learning module in Canvas, making the resource accessible in different formats.
This project demonstrates how Oaklands College is exploring innovative ways to enhance teaching and learning, combining practical expertise with digital technology to create engaging resources that support students throughout their studies.
