With 1.82 million engineering roles needed before 2022, there’s no better time to study engineering. And our Engineering Department at the Welwyn Garden City Campus is the ideal place for you to prepare for your new career.

Engineering covers a whole range of areas, including manufacturing, production, mechatronics, design and electronics. Whatever your interest, our Engineering Department can give you the knowledge and hands-on experience you need to reach your goals.

We have invested millions of pounds in our Engineering facilities to give you the best environment to learn the skills you need to thrive in this diverse sector. Our brand new Engineering Resource Centre gives you access to state-of-the-art computer suites where you can get to grips with the programs and software being using in the industry right now.

Our Engineering team include people who have practical experience in the sector and have worked on real world projects including domestic electronics and computers. They will be able to give you the knowledge you need to succeed.

Having an engineering qualification opens up a world of opportunities for you. You can enter the industry directly as an apprentice or you can continue your studies in Higher Education and achieve Chartered Engineer status in your field of specialism.

All of our full time programmes include opportunities to support and enhance your learning so that you can achieve your goals and ambitions. Students enrol on a Study Programme which individualises their education whilst enhancing their employability skills. A Study programme is made up of four key elements which includes a main vocational qualification, the development of English and maths through the study of GCSE’s or Functional Skills, Work-related learning through work experience and Personal Development Reviews.

BTEC National Foundation / Extended Diploma in Engineering

A broad range of units covering mechanical, electrical and electronic disciplines. You will study subjects including Engineering Maths and Science, Drawing and Design, Electrical and Electronic Principles giving you the knowledge and skills for employment in the Engineering industry.

All Engineering degree schemes at the University of Hertfordshire fulfil the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer status. Including the Initial year in your course, you can complete your degree studies in four years full time or five years sandwich including integrated industrial training. On entry, you select the degree scheme most appropriate to you. On completion your choice is reviewed. The modules studied include engineering studies and skills, mathematics, engineering science, computers and applications to engineering, mechanical science, electrical science and electronics and engineering project.

Extended Degree

If you want to study for a degree but do not meet the entry requirements, completion at this level will guarantee you entry onto the first year of your chosen degree.
