About the course

Take your first steps into the world of British Sign Language with this friendly and engaging 10-week course. Designed for complete beginners, the course provides a practical introduction to BSL, helping you develop basic signing skills while gaining an understanding of how visual languages differ from spoken communication. You will learn everyday vocabulary and essential signing techniques through interactive activities and practice. Topics include the fingerspelling alphabet, colours, numbers, family members, and common greetings, giving you the confidence to communicate using basic BSL in a range of situations. Funded through the Tailored Learning programme, learners are required to complete course paperwork to help reflect on and record their progress throughout the learning journey. Regular attendance is essential to ensure you gain the maximum benefit from the course, so please check that you can attend all sessions before enrolling. If you are in receipt of Universal Credit or your household income falls below the current eligibility threshold, you may qualify for free remission. For further information about eligibility, please contact ACL on 01727 737154 or email acl@oaklands.ac.uk.
