Adult Short Courses in Hertfordshire

We offer a variety of Art & Design courses for adults, suitable for all abilities. Pick up a new hobby in a relaxed, inclusive environment under a watchful eye of our experienced staff.

There are evening and weekend courses which will give you a chance to learn a new skill in arts and design. Whether you'd like to improve your drawing skills or have a go at making a vase by yourself, we offer a variety of courses to fit around your schedule.

Please note you need to be aged 19 or over in order to enroll on our community learning courses. Our courses also need sufficient numbers in order to run but we'll contact you in case of a cancellation.

Printmaking - TRY A NEW CRAFT! Starts Sept, Mon, 18:45-21:00

This course is an introduction to the art of printmaking. You will gain an understanding of the practical aspect of the subject through exploration of 3 or 4 different printmaking techniques and learn something of the historical and contextual influences to improve your design skills.

Felt Making: 1 Day - Sat 19 March, 10.00-16:00

Explore the felt making process to create 2D and 3D examples of a range of techniques. The course is suitable for complete beginners or those with some experience of the process. Using a range of fibres, learners will learn dry felting using felting needles and wet felting techniques.

Pottery - Make a Vase in a Day: Sat 19 Oct, 10:00-16:00

This 1 day course is aimed at beginners. You will learn a variety of building and decorating techniques including slab construction, joining clay, surface decoration and the use of slips and sgrafitto. Your vase will be glazed and fired for you and can be collected at a later date.

Silkscreen Printing for Fabric: 1 Day - Sat 14 March, 10.00-16:00

The basics of silkscreen printing will be covered, starting with paper stencils. Students will then progress onto creating photographic stencils on screens. Different dyes will be explored to create different printing effects and samples will be created layering up different dyes and imagery.

Make a Charm in a Day (Silversmithing): 1 Day - Sat 14 March, 10:00-16:00

You will gain skills in using specialised tools, learn and apply techniques and processes to manipulate copper and silver in making your own unique charm to take home. There will also be an option to purchase a hallmarked chain.

Monoprints are one of the most direct forms of printmaking. The process is often described as liberating and fun with beautiful and often unexpected results. During this one day workshop you will learn how to create original, multi-layered mono prints using transfer drawing, masking and textured surfaces using the etching press. Suitable for beginners and those wishing to refresh their skills. All materials provided.
