Overview
The Level 1 Diploma in Land based Studies a specialist practical and vocational qualification.You learn by completing practical assessments, short written tests and written assignments.
The course is designed to give you an insight into the practicalities and realities of working within an animal care organisation. The course offers a range of topic areas giving you an introduction to the skills needed when working in the animal care industry.
Course Content - What will I learn?
Unit studies include:
Safe and effective working practices in Land based industries, Develop Performance in Land-Based Industries, Assist with maintaining the Health and Wellbeing of Animals, Animals in the Wild and Society, Assist with Feeding and Watering, Assist with Handling and Restraint of Animals, Assist with the Preparation and Maintenance of Animal Accommodation
Am I right for the course?
Formal entry requirements and you should have a strong interest in working with animals.
A strong interest in working with animals with some experience being an an advantage although not essential. 4 GCSEs at grade 3-1 or Entry Level in Animal Care.
To gain the level 1 Certificate in Animal Care, candidates must undertake a range of assessments. The assessments are practical and written assessment. Assessment is ongoing and assessment work is undertaken primarily during college time.
Learners are also required to complete a Functional Skill or GCSE qualification if you have not achieved a grade 4 in maths and English
The Animal Care Department boasts an impressive list of professional experts as part of the team. Each tutor has areas of special interest such as behaviour, training, farm livestock, exotics and animal health.
What Next?
Progression to further courses depends on individuals results and GCSEs, but could include moving on to a level 2 course such as the Level 2 technical certificate in Animal Care Learners who successfully complete the course are also ideally suited to employment in kennels, catteries and pet shops.
For those of you wanting to go into employment, the aim of our course(s) are to produce competent carers working with animals, with the potential to take up management positions after further experience.

16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.
For all two year courses fees shown above are per year.
Aged 19+ and planning to take a level 3 or above a different fee may apply. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan.
All HE courses (full and part time) are subject to tuition fees.
