Meet: Ben
Ben, a Level 3 Apprentice in Electrotechnical, speaks to the college about his experiences on the apprenticeship program and gives advice to prospective students.

Currently studying his first year of a two-year apprenticeship at Oaklands College, Ben has excelled in both the theory and practical element of his studies.
Speaking to Oaklands College about his experience as an apprentice, Ben said: “I chose to study an apprenticeship at the college as I felt the employment possibilities after qualifying were far greater than studying a university-based degree.”
Ben passionately believes that apprenticeships are the right route into employment for students who prefer working in a more practical environment and learning on the job, as opposed to students who prefer theoretical based studies through Universities.
Ben said: “During my time as an apprentice, I’ve been able to learn on the job and develop my skills with the mentorship of my peers and industry experts who have worked in the industry.”
Speaking about the perks of studying an apprenticeship, Ben added: “I’ve been able to learn on the job whilst getting paid to study, which was a huge attraction for me when starting out. I feel the practical industry experience gained from apprenticeships will make me more desirable for potential employers.”
Ben currently spends one to two days a week based at Oaklands College, with the rest of his apprenticeship made up during the week with his employer, Amco Giffen.
Amco Giffen provide a comprehensive range of specialist construction and engineering services, allowing apprentices to get hands-on experience within their chosen industries.
Speaking of his job role at the company, Ben said: “My current role is based at a train depot, where I have been installing lighting, cabling and setting up communication systems. My biggest achievement so far has been creating adaptable wiring boxes for train depots, which have been put in place for emergency lighting situations.”
Ben’s advice for any students who are thinking about studying an apprenticeship is to “take your time to decide what you want to study, to make sure that it is something that you want to fully commit to and pursue as a career.”
