Ex-Olympian Daniel Caines Joins Forces with Sports Makers and Oaklands College to Raise Awareness for the Importance of Sports

On Wednesday morning Oaklands College sports students had the chance to not only hear the story of ex-Olympian Daniel Caines, but also get involved in workshops with him and the Sports Makers from the Herts Sports Partnership.

Using the inspirational pull of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Sport Makers is a programme that aims to recruit, train and deploy 40,000 people aged 16 and over to organise and lead community sporting activities across the UK.

Running until September 2013 as part of the People strand of Sport England’s Mass Participation Legacy programme, Sports Makers attracted over 100 Oaklands Students that one day wish to compete in their chosen field at National and possibly International level.

Each student learnt about how Sport Makers fit in with the Olympic and Paralympic values, how to make the biggest difference to sport, the benefits of being involved in Sport Makers and how to get involved, make sport happen locally and get started.

Ex-Olympian, Daniel Caines, whose athletic career saw him win World, European & Commonwealth titles over the 400 and 4 x 400m, commented: “The morning was a great success, I hope my story encouraged the Oaklands students to keep pursuing their sporting dreams, just as I did.

“To see their interaction and participation was very encouraging and exciting, there was a real buzz throughout the morning.”
