Carpentry & Joinery students combine with Springfield to create college Pumpkin Patch

Level 2 Carpentry & Joinery students have teamed up with Horticulture and Springfield students to build a giant pumpkin patch, to help fund a sensory garden for current Oaklands College students at the Springfield Centre. 

Students and staff members at Oaklands College will participate in growing giant pumpkins, with sponsorship money contributing to the sensory garden fundraising efforts.

The sensory garden will be used as an educational playground suitable for all, with knowledge and information boards on display for students which will enable them to gain knowledge of the variety of plants on display as well as being able to see, smell, touch and experience therapeutic sounds within the garden.

Additionally, Level 3 students will help to design the garden and a variety of different departments will be able to send their students down to the garden to contribute to their work experience hours.

The pumpkin patch, which has already undergone construction with picket fencing and framework created and installed by carpentry students, is located by the Discovery Centre opposite the Horticulture garden and greenhouse.

Finally, Springfield students will be creating and painting decorative flower displays to feature around the fencing of the garden in what promises to be an exciting communal college project.
