Last week, 14 Hospitality and Catering students from Oaklands College took part in the annual British Student Culinary Competition, hosted by Craft Guild of Chefs.

The Level 1 VRQ and Level 2 NVQ in Professional Cookery students excelled, taking six Gold, four Silver, two best in class and five Certificates of Merit. In the overall College Award, Oaklands ranked second, missing out on top spot by a single point.

Level 1 VRQ student Summer Wheeldon was awarded Best Overall Practical student across all classes, winning gold in the live cookery classes for her gateau and a Certificate of Merit in the display class competition.

Judge’s feedback highlighted the skills of Oaklands students, congratulating them on their professionalism and dedication to hard work and fine details. Judges were surprised to hear that a large proportion of students had only been at college for six weeks, a testament to their commitment and the teaching team at Oaklands.

Students will be eager to continue their success and showcase their skills at the upcoming HRC Show from 21 – 23 March, the UK’s largest and most prestigious event for the hospitality and foodservice industry at EXCEL London. Tutors will be hand-selecting a number of students to take part in the event.
