A fashion student from Oaklands College turned heads today in St Albans town centre as she showed off her latest creation, a dress made out of 1,000 Tesco plastic bags.

Demi Chalkley designed the dress as part of a class project looking at environment and sustainability. She looked into recycling and the different ways supermarkets contribute to the environment.

Taking ten hours to make, Demi used various techniques such as heat sealing and patchwork stitching to mould the bags together.

The dress, along with other creations from the class will be displayed during the fashion show and exhibition taking place between 6-14 April in the town centre as part of St Albans Council’s Environment and Sustainability awareness week.
