Oaklands College has teamed up with Rothamsted Research to launch the institute’s first formal apprenticeship scheme.

The scheme will see local young people bring fresh ideas to the Harpenden-based research institute, and in return, gain a wealth of knowledge from some of Rothamsted’s scientific experts and administrative professionals whilst earning a wage as they work.

Rothamsted Research, which is strategically funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), is the longest running agricultural research station in the world, providing cutting-edge science and innovation for more than 170 years.

Andrea Fitzgerald, the College’s Head of Business Development, said: “We are really excited to be working alongside Rothamsted to launch what will be the Institute’s first such apprenticeship scheme. This partnership will not only give our students the chance to work in a professional environment and learn on the job, but it will also support Rothamsted to grow their own talent locally, providing local jobs for local people.”

During the life of the scheme, Rothamsted Research will offer apprenticeships across all areas of the institute’s activities, including laboratory and agricultural science, horticulture, IT, facilities, communications and more.

Prof Achim Dobermann, Director and Chief Executive of Rothamsted Research said: “The scheme will create a fantastic opportunity for us to support the Institute’s needs, whilst offering young people the benefit of acquiring new skills, valuable knowledge and experience from our experts.”

“Through the scheme we hope to gain access to new talent that will complement our existing workforce, whilst improving the Institute’s productivity and competitiveness and helping to build long and sustainable careers for young people who are keen to succeed.”
