Oaklands students combine their expertise for St Albans Museum project

Students from two departments in Oaklands College are working together on a project to produce an important public-facing educational piece of work for St Albans Verulamium Museum. 

Students from the College’s Supported Learning department are producing a video guide to provide information for first time visitors to the museum. The video will include information on the location of the museum, what to expect when you arrive and some other interesting aspects of the museum. The film is being shot by three of Oaklands own Foundation Degree Media students, who have lent their skills and expertise in filmmaking to shoot and edit the video professionally. 

Filming wraps up this week, with the final film expected to be polished and ready for viewing by the public in the New Year. 

Leading on the project for the film’s stars is Work Placement Officer Rhys Wynne, who developed the project after first delivering Autism awareness training to the museum team earlier this summer.

He said: “In Supported Learning we have a team now qualified to deliver autism awareness training to local employers and organisations, enabling greater understanding of the condition and ways in which their work environment can be adapted. 

“Through this initial meeting, the project has evolved to be a great platform for these students to have a voice and raise awareness in the local community. It is great that we can use the expertise of our Media students to deliver a professional film that will inform the museums visitors. It’s been a pleasure working with the St Albans Museums team and we can’t wait to see the final cut.”
