Acorns Nursery St Albans

Acorns Nursery is a 50 place day care setting for children between the ages of 3 months and 5 years. We are based in a homely converted Manor House within the rural grounds of Oaklands College, St Albans Campus, Smallford. The Nursery is open to private families as well as College students and employees.

At Acorns Nursery it is our intention to provide quality education and care in an atmosphere and environment where individual needs are respected and valued and where the voices and contributions of children are heard and acted upon. We recognise the rapid development and growth of the children in our care and that high quality early experience lays the foundation to a child’s motivation, self-esteem, excitement and approach towards their world.

Relationships lie at the heart of our ethos. These relationships are in partnership with families and emphasise mutual trust and respect. The strength and success, of our nursery, is largely dependent on the continual commitment and involvement of every family. We actively encourage families to support their children by contributing to the construction of the nursery’s culture and community.

We take consideration of current research, trends and thinking in Early Years provision and reflect on the appropriateness of our processes, procedures and practice. We promote and value the diversity and benefits of different learning styles and approaches and do not base our learning concept or ethos on any one philosophy. We embrace children’s natural curiosity as learners and ability to use this attribute as a self-educator. Through observation and reflection of theory in practice we monitor developmental progress, differentiate challenge and set unique individual next steps for each learner.

Partnership with Parents

At Acorns we pride ourselves on working in partnership with parents. Children’s experiences at home are extremely significant to their development and all the staff in the nursery acknowledge the parent’s fundamental role in their child’s education.

Parents are encouraged to visit the nursery with their child prior to admission into the nursery. This ensures parents can discuss with the staff the child’s routines and any information that may be useful in settling the child. We also recommend a minimum of three settling visits for each child.

Our developmental records are designed to be shared with parents. For instance, we send out parent home link and observation sheets every 6 weeks and parents are also encouraged to take home their child’s learning journal so that they can write in their own comments and observations. Contributions from parents are always welcome and appreciated.

We hold regular parent evenings and supply information through our parent’s notice board and regular newsletters. We also hold workshops for parents on different topics associated with the Early Years such as how children learn, the importance of play and common childhood topics such as weaning, potty training, sibling rivalry and much more. These are great opportunities to meet with our staff and other parents and gain advice and sometimes a little reassurance.

Acorns also has a ‘Friends of the Nursery’ group which meet regularly at our tea afternoons in order to mingle, share top tips and come up with fundraising ideas for the nursery.

"We are so pleased with Acorns Nursery and would highly recommend it to anyone thinking of sending their child there. Our son has been there over two years now and really enjoys it. We have noticed his development sky rocket since being at Acorns and he has built up a number of friendships with the local children and staff.
Wendy and her team are amazing (don’t know how they do it!). They are always caring, thoughtful, run lovely events for the children and parents throughout the year, including trips away and certainly keep the children both educated and entertained.

All the staff are friendly, supportive and the team have (on more than one occasion) taken the time out to support our son through the trials and tribulations of growing up. We are always kept up to date of his development and time at the nursery. They are also very attentive to any of our requests or needs, including special meals or allergies and also take into account the childrens’ interests when planning activities.

We would like to thank everyone there for providing our son with such a lovely environment (not just the farms and sheep nearby!) that has allowed our son to thrive and would not hesitate to recommend this OUTSTANDING nursery to anyone."
