VENICE — Art, Fashion & Design (AFD) students across the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design, Photography and Multimedia Level 3 Year 2 courses, recently visited Venice, Italy; the floating city, the city of masks, bridges and canals.

This visit took place during the annual carnival, with many extraordinary masks and costumes on display in public spaces. Students had the opportunity to visit, draw and photograph, the busy Pizza San Marco, the Grand Canal, the Bridge of Sighs, the Rialto Bridge, The Peggy Guggenheim Collection of art, along with visiting the islands of Burano, with its brightly painted houses and Murano, known for its glass-making.

This study visit will now form the starting point, directly or indirectly, for many of the Final Major Projects the Art, Fashion & Design students are currently working on and will subsequently have displayed during their end-of-year exhibition, which this year takes place on the week of 10 June.

Special thanks go to AFD Lecturers Lauren Vassell Leighton and Sarah Easterby for the planning and organisation of this ambitious study visit.

The trip represented the largest and furthest trip that the Art, Fashion and Design department have organised at Oaklands College and will be the benchmark for future events within the department.
